Lawrence English
Lawrence English is media artist, composer and curator based in Australia. Working across an eclectic array of aesthetic investigations, English’s work prompts questions of field, perception and memory. English utilises a variety of approaches including live performance, installation and found sound/vision to create works that generate subtle transformation of space and ask audiences to become aware of that which exists at the edge of perception.
For over a decade, English’s audio investigations have traversed a divergent path where musical and environmental sources are granted equal focus. His work calls into question the established relationships of sound and structure – field recordings and musical materials work in unison, acting as suggestive devices. Rather than prescriptive, English’s sound work calls for the listener to construct their own narratives and impressions based on their personal histories and experiences. Published widely on respected imprints including Touch, 12K and Winds Measure, English’s work is sculpted and overwhelmingly intricate. The Wire noted his ‘use of space and silence is remarkable’, and U.S. sound journal Signal To Noise described the Ghost Towns work as ‘extraordinarily gorgeous modern music concréte’.
As a producer English has completed numerous projects with artists including Tujiko Noriko (U, Blurred In My Mirror), Ben Frost (Theory Of Machines), Tenniscoats (Totemo Aimasho, Temporacha) and The Rational Academy (Swans). He has also completed commissioned compositions for acclaimed avant-circus troupe Circa, various theatre ensembles and has worked as a sound designer in collaboration with artists including Australian visualist Craig Walsh. ROOM40 is a label and multi-arts organisation based in Brisbane, Australia. Since 2000, ROOM40 has published over 70 uniquely packaged editions and multiples in the fields of electronics, improvisation, experimental-pop and sound-art.
Curated by Lawrence English, the label continues to publish in and around the margins of each of these fields, drawing on a diverse roster of both established and emergent sound-makers.
Pitchfork described Room40 as “the foremost purveyor of experimental music in the Southern Hemisphere”, calling the label’s editions “total fetish property…it just looks like something you’d want to have sitting on your shelf”. The label has been widely recognised and praised, with features in numerous magazines (The Wire, XLR8R, Pitchfork, MCD, DE:Bug etc) and books including a number of renowned design journals.
In 2010 Room40 is presenting a series of special live events in Australia, UK, Europe, Japan and the USA that brings together a selection of the artists who have worked with the label over the past 10 years.

John Chantler
John Chantler is an omnivorous recording artist/musician based in London, UK. Starting out as a drummer, John still keeps loose time for Outshine Family (Black Maps) and The Balky Mule (Fat Cat) whilst exploring his own solo synthesizer works and occasionally convening the Organ Octet – a massed organ ensemble of eight reed/chord organs. He also plays synth in a trio with Tujiko Noriko and Lawrence English and as Holy Family – a duo with Lawrence English.
In 2001, he left his native Australia for a two year stint in rural Japan. During that time he released his debut disc ‘Monoke’ – a collection of “deceptively simple” melodic electronica and “the first in a series of essential recordings” according to The Milk Factory.
John also had a chance encounter with Tori Kudo, the enigmatic leader of Maher Shalal Hash Baz after a misdirected magazine subscription made Tori aware of John’s presence in his patch of nowhere Japan. An exchange of letters put a rough mix of Maher’s ‘Blues du Jour’ in the post and blew the gates wide open.
John took up Tori’s offer to join Maher for a show in Tokyo (documented on the ‘Live Aoiheya’ disc on Chapter Music) and there met Saya and Ueno of Tenniscoats. John went on to collaborate with Tenniscoats, co-producing their ROOM40 album ‘Totemo Aimasho’ (2007) with Lawrence English and drumming for them on tours in Australia and the UK.
In 2003, John relocated to his current base in London, playing regular live shows mixing guitar, laptop, and drums into increasingly rough-hewn and psychedelic shapes. He then started working with Carina Thorén on a series of uncategorisable sides that culminated in the duo’s ROOM40 LP ‘New Days’.

In 2005, John had sent down some drums long distance to Lawrence English who was putting together ‘Blurred in my Mirror’ with Tuojiko Norik. For the follow-up ‘U’ (200 – they instead convened in Brisbane with John laying down guitar, bass, drums, synths and other instruments. It was during that session that the modular synth bug bit and John returned to the UK and began the dark decent into black hole of synth obsession, putting together the instrument that forms the basis of his new LP, ‘The Luminous Ground’.

Ephraim Wegner
Ephraim Wegner started his career as DJ for electronic music, but shifts in the nineties to composing his own pieces of music and developing digital and electronic music control systems. Here his main focus is concentrated on controlling the electronics directly – by visitors of interactive installations or by working together with other musicians. Another important focus in working with electronic music is the quality of the sound itself, from which oscillations and sounds with different characteristics result and the different modes of musical applicability. Already existing, recorded noises and sound processes play a decisive role – for deconstruction as well as for simulation.
He operates mainly in the area of the Musique Concrète, electroacoustics and New Music. Up to now there were numerous cooperations with various musicians and ensembles (among others Alexander Grebtschenko, ensemble chronophonie, ensemble alarm, Guillaume Chastel and Trio Skug). He created a lot of musical performances and installations (e.g. at the ZKM, Art´s Birthday – an event of the SWR or for the Baden-Württemberg theatre days). Furthermore the artist composes music for documentaries, art films and short movies as well as for theatre plays. Until October 2010 he had his own radio show broadcasted by radio Dreyeckland and is organizing an established event series for experimental music in Freiburg.

Lawrence English ist ein ungewöhnliches Ausnahmetalent der musique concréte-Szene. Nicht nur als Musiker, sondern auch als Videokünstler und Kurator genießt der in Brisbane lebende Australier mittlerweile weltweite Anerkennung. Seine vielfältigen Arbeiten basieren hierbei auf einer differenzierten, sensiblen Auseinandersetzung mit der hör- und sichtbaren Umgebung des Menschen. In verschiedenen Projekten experimentiert English mit allen Varianten der rezeptiven Wahrnehmung.
Als Produzent hat English mit Künstlern wie Tujiko Noriko (U, Blurred In My Mirror), Ben Frost (Theory Of Machines), Tenniscoats (Totemo Aimasho, Temporacha) and The Rational Academy (Swans) zusammengearbeitet.
Lawrence English ist Gründer und Kurator von ROOM40, einem Label und Dachverband für verschiedene Kunstprojekte in Brisbane, Australien. Seit 2000 hat ROOM40 mehr als 70 einzigartig verpackte Ausgaben herausgegeben und ein Vielfaches im Bereich der Elektronik, Improvisation, experimentellem Pop und Klangkunst veröffentlicht.

2010 veranstaltete Room40 eine Reihe von Live-Acts in Australien, Großbritannien, Europa, Japan und den USA. Dabei traten Künstler auf, die im Laufe der letzten 10 Jahre zusammen mit dem Label gearbeitet haben.

John Chantler
John Chantler ist ein Studiokünstler/Musiker und lebt in London. Als Drummer spielte Chantler noch mit Outshine Family (Black Maps) and The Balky Mule (Fat Cat), während er seine eigenen Synthesizer-Arbeiten vorantrieb und gelegentlich mit einem Orgel-Ensemble experimentierte. Er spielt Synthesizer im Trio mit Tujiko Noriko und Lawrence English und als Duo mit Lawrence English in Holy Family.
Ab 2001 hielt er sich für zwei Jahre im ländlichen Japan auf. Während dieser Zeit veröffentlichte er seine Debüt-Scheibe „Monoke“, eine Sammlung „trügerisch-einfacher“ melodischer Elektronik-Stücke.
Dort begegnete er auch zum erstenmal Tori Kudo, dem schillernden Frontmann von Maher Shalal Hash Baz. Auf einem Live-Gig mit Maher (dokumentiert auf dem „Live Aoiheya“-Album von dem Label Chapter Music) lernte er Saya und Ueno von den Tenniscoats kennen. Zusammen mit Lawrence English produzierte er 2007 ihr ROOM40-Album Totemo Aimasho und begleitete die Tenniscoats auf Touren in Australien und Großbritannien auf den Drums.
2003 ließ sich Chantler in London nieder, wo er regelmäßig Live-Performances gibt, in denen er Gitarren-, Trommel- und Laptopsounds zu sich steigernden roh-hämmernden und psychedelischen Klängen mischt . Mit Carina Thorén veröffentlichte er auf ROOM40 das Album „New Days“.
2005 lieferte er die Drumsounds zu „Blurred in my Mirror“, einem Album von Tuojiko Noriko und Lawrence English. Für die nachfolgende, gemeinsame Produktion „U“ spielt John Chantler Gitarre, Bass, Trommeln, Synthesizer sowie weitere Instrumente. Auf seiner 2011 erschienenen zweiten Solo-CD „The Luminous Ground“ generiert Chandler mit seinem Synthesizer Klangbilder voll differenzierten Strukturen und wohldosierter Dynamik.

Ephraim Wegner
Ephraim Wegner begann seine Karriere als DJ im elektronischen Bereich, verlagerte aber Ende der Neunziger seine künstlerische Arbeit auf das Komponieren eigener Stücke sowie auf die Entwicklung von digitalen und elektronischen Steuersystemen. Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit ist hierbei das direkte Steuern der Elektronik – sei es durch den Besucher bei interaktiven Installationen oder im Zusammenspiel mit anderen Musikern. Ein weiterer wichtiger Punkt bei der Auseinandersetzung mit elektronischer Musik ist die Beschaffenheit des Klangs an sich, aus welchen Schwingungen resultieren Klänge mit unterschiedlichen Charakteristika. Auch bereits vorhandene, aufgenommene Geräusche und Klangverläufe spielen hierbei eine Rolle. Sowohl für die Dekonstruktion als auch für die Simulation.
Seine musikalischen Arbeiten sind größtenteils im Bereich der Musique Concrète, Elektroakustik und Neuen Musik anzusiedeln. Es gibt zahlreiche Kooperationen mit anderen Musikern und Ensembles (u.a. @C, Alexander Grebtschenko, Cem Güney, ensemble chronophonie, Ensemble Alarm, Gilles Aubry oder Skug). Musikalische Aufführungen oder Installationen waren bereits im ZKM, den Baden-Württembergischen Theatertagen oder bei Art´s Birthday – einer Veranstaltung des SWR – zu hören. Des Weiteren vertont Ephraim Wegner Dokumentar-, Kunst- und Kurzfilme sowie Theater-Aufführungen.
Bis Oktober 2010 gestaltete er seine eigene Radiosendung bei Radio Dreyeckland und ist Gastgeber einer fest etablierten Veranstaltungsreihe für experimentale Musik in Freiburg.
